Scholarship founders John and Karon Bull with James Barker, WSMC President
Fund will aid employees furthering education in a health care field
West Shore Medical Center employees have a new resource to help with the cost of education, thanks to Manistee County residents and cherry growers John and Karon Bull. The Bulls made a $10,000 donation to West Shore Healthcare Foundation to establish a scholarship endowment fund for hospital staff. As an endowed fund, the principal will remain untouched in perpetuity, while the interest will be used to generate annual scholarships to help West Shore employees pay for continuing education in a health care-related field.
“It came to my attention that there was no scholarship at West Shore for employees wanting to improve their skills,” said John Bull, a self-described longtime user of the hospital’s services. “I thought there was a need we could help fill.” Proponents of education, the Bulls have made other scholarship contributions, but this is their first endowed fund.
It is also the first endowed fund at West Shore Medical Center. “We are honored to receive this very generous gift,” said West Shore President, James Barker. “The scholarships generated will be a tremendous help to our clinical staff who wish to further their education. Health care changes all the time, new technologies and best practices are continually being developed, so continuing education is extremely important.”
The first round of scholarships will be awarded this spring. The amount of scholarship funding available annually will depend on the fund’s investment performance each year. West Shore Medical Center associates pursuing education in a direct patient care field are eligible to apply.
“Endowed funds are special because the principal remains intact, guaranteeing the scholarship won’t be depleted” said Barker. “We hope the community will consider a year-end gift to this fund to help support local health care and West Shore’s continuing commitment to excellence in service and quality. The larger the fund, the more scholarships the Foundation will be able to award.”
