GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under direct supervision of the Surgery Manager and working with a Registered Nurse, according to AORN and AST standards and Medical Center policy and procedures, assists with surgical procedures as a scrub member of the surgical team. Prepares instruments and maintains a clean and safe surgical environment.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs job responsibilities in an ethical, compliant manner consistent with the organization’s values and the Medical Center’s Corporate Compliance program, policies, procedures and protocols.
Demonstrates knowledge in all areas of surgical asepsis, helps maintain and monitor the sterile field, and addresses any breaks in aseptic technique immediately.
Has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon.
In accordance with AST/AORN standards and doctors preference, ensures (or assists in ensuring) the presence of all instruments, equipment/supplies necessary for surgical procedure; inspects all instrument trays and supplies for sterile integrity prior to delivering to the sterile field.
Assists with gowning and gloving surgeon and assistants; passes instruments, sutures, and sponges according to doctor’s request and anticipation of needs; assists in maintaining accurate count of items on sterile field per policy. Assists physician with procedure as directed.
Works collaboratively with circulating RN in the safe handling and labeling of medications on the sterile field and the correct labeling and handling surgical specimens.
Demonstrates ability to decontaminate, clean, and terminally sterilize instruments as needed during normal hours of operation and on call.
Assists with cleaning the operating room before, in between, and after procedures during normal hours of operation and on call.
Assists in the transportation and positioning of patients when necessary.
Takes call as scheduled during week nights, weekends, and holidays as necessary.
Participates in the development of Operating Room policies and procedures.
Assists in other Medical Center areas, as directed by the Operating Room Manger or designee.
Complies with Universal Protocol as it applies to patient safety including being an active member of the “Time Out” process. Applies other PI concepts and methods throughout related activities.
Performs other related duties as requested.
Encourages subordinates and works in a safe and healthy manner to prevent injury or illness.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Graduate of an accredited surgical technology course and be eligible for certification as a surgical technologist; must achieve certification within 6 months of hiring.
Mental ability to concentrate for prolonged periods, attending to procedure and physician’s requests.
Knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology as it pertains to the surgical patient.
Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with patients, physicians and other nursing staff Associates.
Ability to follow direction of Surgery Manager and/or Staff Nurse.
Physical ability necessary for almost constant standing, walking, lifting, and transporting patients and carrying supplies and equipment. These activities may occur at a minimum of 4 to 6 times per hour throughout an 8 to 12 hour shift. |
