Position: Surgical Technician
Facility: West Shore Medical Center
Description:

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Graduate of an accredited surgical technology course or licensed practical nursing school. Eligible for certification as a surgical technologist.

Mental ability to concentrate for prolonged periods, attending to procedure and physician's requests.

Knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology as it pertains to the surgical patient.

Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with patients, physicians and other nursing staff Associates.

Ability to follow direction of Surgery Manager and/or Staff Nurse.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

In accordance with doctors preference and AORN standards, ensures (or assists in ensuring) the presence of all instruments, equipment and supplies necessary for surgical procedure; inspects all instrument trays and supplies for integrity prior to delivering to the sterile field.

Assists surgeon (and/or scrub nurse) as scrubbed assistant according to AORN standards; assists gowning and gloving surgeon; passes instruments, sutures and sponges according to doctors request and anticipation of needs; assists in maintaining accurate count of items on sterile field per policy. Assists physician with procedure as directed.

Demonstrates knowledge in all areas of surgical asepsis, helps maintain and monitor the sterile field, and addresses any breaks in aseptic technique immediately.

Assists in the transportation and positioning of patients when necessary.

Works collaboratively with the Registered Nurse in correctly labeling and handling surgical specimens.

Demonstrates ability to decontaminate and process instruments on call and as needed during normal hours of operation.

Participates in the development of Operating Room procedures.

Takes call as scheduled week nights, weekends and holidays as  necessary.

Assists in other Medical Center areas, as directed by the Surgical Services Manager or Clinical Coordinator.

Assists with cleaning the operating room during normal hours of operation and on call.

Performs job responsibilities in an ethical, compliant manner consistent with the organization's values and the Medical Center's Corporate Compliance program, policies, procedures and protocols.

Applies PI concepts and methods throughout related activities.

Performs other related duties as requested.
