GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under general supervision of Surgery Manager and in accordance with established policies, procedures and nursing standards, provides and manages professional nursing care for the Perioperative patient. Exercises independent judgment through use of the nursing process by assessing, planning, implementing, interpreting and evaluating patient care. Works closely with and may lead other professional and ancillary nursing personnel providing total nursing care to assigned patients.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
One or more years of nursing experience in surgery, CCU, OB, ED or recovery room in order to a) acquire a thorough knowledge of the scientific principles of nursing, b) acquire a thorough knowledge of professional nursing standards, c) develop skill in nursing techniques and ability to adapt techniques to individual needs, d) require working knowledge of procedures and techniques used with post-surgical patients and e) become familiar with Medical Center policies, procedures and standards.
Current registered nursing licensure to practice in the State of Michigan.
BCLS required.
12 lead EKG administration ability preferred.
Analytical ability, as well as visual, hearing and sensory touch acuity, necessary to assess patients' condition, developmental needs, and utilize the nursing process and professional judgment in providing care to surgical patients of all age populations (i.e., peds, geriatric, adolescent, and adult).
Interpersonal skills necessary to a) interact with patients and families, frequently during periods of emotional stress or anxiety, and b) work in collaboration with Medical Center staff and physicians.
Emotional/mental ability to perform effectively and efficiently under the daily pressure of stressful or emergency situations.
Pre-op evaluation, or testing experience preferred.
Physical ability necessary for almost constant standing, walking, lifting, and transporting patients and carrying supplies and equipment, use of personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to blood or body fluids, and ability to perform intermittent keyboarding.
Required competency in the assessment and treatment of all age specific groups.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs direct patient care activities in accordance with the American Nurses Association Scope & Standards of Nursing Practice, as well as the Association of PeriOperative Nurses Standards of Perioperative Professional Practice , and The American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses.
a) Collects comprehensive data pertinent to the patient's
health or the situation. This is an ongoing, systematic
process that involves holistic data collection that can
be prioritized based upon evidence-based techniques.
b) Analyzes the assessment data to determine the nursing diagnoses or issues. Reports pertinent information to appropriate person(s) regarding patients' condition, medications given, treatments administered and test results. Maintains confidentiality regarding patient information according to HIPPA rules.
c) Identifies expected outcomes for a plan individualized to the patient or the situation. Plans shall take into consideration cultural and age-specific patient/family needs.
d) Develops a plan that prescribes strategies and alternatives to attain expected outcomes. Plans shall be developed in conjunction with patient/family/ancillary staff input and include strategies for continuity and timelines for completion. Explains procedures, treatments and medications to family and patient to help allay their fears and increase their understanding of their periopreative experience.
e) Implements the identified plan and coordinates care delivery strategies to promote health and a safe environment.
f) Evaluates effectiveness of planned strategies and progress
toward attainment of outcomes.
g) Observes and documents patients' changing responses and initiates appropriate nursing intervention.
h) Prepares or directs the preparation of necessary equipment and instruments and assists physician during treatment / exam.
i) Performs technical tasks safely and according to current procedure utilizing working knowledge of associated equipment.
j) Maintains current knowledge of medications and I.V. solutions in terms of purpose, side effects and contraindications.
k) Provides care to the perioperative patient in the Same Day Care unit, Post Anesthesia Care unit, and Pre-op testing area.
Performs indirect patient care activities in accordance with the American Nurses Association Scope & Standards of Professional Performance, AORN, and ASPAN
a) Systematically evaluating the quality, safety and appropriateness of nursing practice. Demonstrates quality by participating in quality of care activities with a focus on nursing practice, safety, continuity of care and outcomes. Such as: Identifying dimensions of performance and developing quality indicators for each. Collecting data, evaluating care and taking action to improve care. Applying gained knowledge in a respectful, accountable, and ethical manner.
b) Attains knowledge and competency that reflects current nursing practice. Participates in ongoing educational activities related to appropriate knowledge bases and professional issues.
c) Evaluates own nursing practice in relation to professional practice standards and guidelines, relevant statutes, rules, and regulations.
d) Interacts with and contributes to the professional development of peers, subordinates, and other health care providers.
e) Collaborates with patient, family, and others in the conduct
of nursing practice.
f) Integrates ethical provisions in all areas of practice. Performs job responsibilities in an ethical, compliant manner consistent with the organization's values and the hospital's Corporate Compliance Program, policies, procedures, and protocols.
g) Integrates research findings into practice.
h) Maintains supplies and equipment for the areas assigned to work. Reports need or orders needed supplies and reports needed repairs. Requests new and additional equipment necessary.
i) Assists in the development of policies, procedures, and protocols for the department and participates in Quality Assurance Program activities.
j) Assists in the maintenance of the Surgical/PACU logs. Gathers and reports statistical data as requested.
k) Takes call in PACU so that Surgery can provide 24 hour coverage for emergency surgery situations.
l) Participates in nursing staff committees.
m) Maintains and documents competency of skills through successful completion of the annual Nursing Skills Fair.
n) Considers factors related to safety, effectiveness, efficiency and environmental concerns and cost, in the planning and delivery of patient care.
o) Provides leadership in the professional practice setting and
the profession.
p) Encourages members of the patient care team and works in a safe and healthy manner to prevent injury or illness
q) Performs other related duties as requested.
