Position: Respiratory Care and Sleep Center Manager
Facility: West Shore Medical Center
Description:

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Responsible for planning, organizing, directing and controlling the activities of associates engaged in the provision of quality respiratory and sleep diagnostics care. Responsible for Respiratory Therapy and Sleep Center operations. This individual collaborates with physicians regarding standards and practices of respiratory care and sleep studies.

 

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Bachelor’s degree in Respiratory Therapy required, MBA preferred.

 

Prior experience in the operational management of respiratory therapy, sleep medicine and outpatient sleep clinics strongly preferred.

 

Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) through the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) required.

 

Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) through the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) preferred.

 

ACLS required.

 

Three to five years of progressively more responsible experiences in order to have:

    1. Acquired advanced knowledge of respiratory theory and principles
    2. Acquired advanced knowledge of sleep theory and principles (if credentialed)
    3. Acquired thorough knowledge of techniques, procedures and equipment
    4. Developed proficiency in the utilization of equipment and application of techniques and procedures
    5. Developed appropriate analytical, interpersonal and managerial skills.

 

Analytical ability as well as visual, hearing, and sensory touch acuity necessary to  assess patient conditions, developmental needs, and evaluation of progress in order to make appropriate treatment alterations in providing care to patients of all age populations.  Ability to record and interpret patient data and interpret test results.

 

Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively interact with patients, medical staff, and all levels of Medical Center personnel and representatives of outside agencies.

 

Analytical and problem solving ability necessary to prepare and administer     departmental budget, analyze equipment, develop policies and procedures, schedule personnel, provide technical assistance, resolve operational problems, and prepare reports.

 

Skills necessary to plan, organize, direct and control the activities of staff of the above departments.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

In consultation with Executive leadership, develops departmental short and long term goals and the plans designed to accomplish agreed upon goals.

 

Formulates policies for the department and secures appropriate approvals. Develops and administers procedures necessary to implement approved policy.  Provides the overall direction necessary to ensure optimal delivery of services.

 

Interviews, disciplines and recommends the discharge of associates. Schedules associates and assigns their work; adjusts schedules and assignments as necessary.

 

Establishes job standards and clinical competencies for effective job performance. Develops and conducts function specific in-service and orientation programs for departmental associates. 

 

Responsible for the development of effective, efficient organizational processes to     achieve:

    1. Efficient patient work flow
    2. Efficient delivery of patient services
    3. Effective utilization of staff
    4. Clarity of the duties/responsibilities
    5. Quality patient care.

 

Provides timely information to associates through means including routine meetings and individual discussions on matters of interest or necessary to effective job performance.

 

Establishes, implements and monitors an ongoing Performance Improvement program. Responsible for departmental compliance with regulatory and accrediting agency standards and guidelines.

 

Develops and administers departmental safety programs; monitors associate conformance with safety standards and ensures that staff associates enforce such standards.  Ensures departmental conformance to standards and guidelines promulgated by pertinent governmental and regulatory bodies.

 

Receives and investigates all complaints concerning the department and its associates; takes appropriate corrective action.

 

Oversee the procurement of departmental equipment and provision of prompt repair and maintenance of and ensures the effective management of materials and supplies necessary for efficient patient care.

 

Serves as liaison with other Medical Center departments; establishes the working rapport necessary to develop cooperation and effectively integrate departmental services with Medical Center's overall patient care delivery system.

 

Performs staff respiratory therapy duties as necessary and sleep diagnostic testing as necessary if trained.  Fulfills all duties and responsibilities of respiratory therapist and sleep technologist as defined in the job description, as needed. Serves as a resource to staff, providing advice and assistance when necessary.

 

Oversees and audits the charge system for services performed.

 

Responsible for promoting/marketing utilization of departmental services.

 

Remains abreast of developments in the fields of respiratory therapy and sleep diagnostic testing by attending seminars, reviewing pertinent literature and interacting with peers.  Integrates or recommends the integration of advances when considered practical.

 

Prepares and maintains departmental records as well as special and recurring reports and analyzes, ensuring they are complete, accurate and timely; reviews and interprets these to ascertain the extent to which departmental goals and standards are being attained; takes corrective action as necessary.

 

Performs job responsibilities in an ethical, compliant manner consistent with the organization's values and the Medical Center's Corporate Compliance program, policies, procedures and protocols.

 

Applies PI concepts and methods throughout related activities.  Directs PI projects as needed.

 

Performs other related duties as requested.
