Tuition & LoansEducation Support

In an effort to reduce the impact of shortages in the health care professions represented here, West Shore Medical Center offers support to those individuals who are pursuing additional education or professional development. Support is available to West Shore associates as well as those not currently employed at the hospital.

For more information or an application for any of these programs, please contact Human Resources at (231) 398-1104.

Tuition Reimbursement
West Shore associates are eligible for tuition reimbursement for courses in an accredited program or for professional certification, licensure, or registration related to their current or future position West Shore.

Clara Kraus Saari Student Education Program
Students in this program receive loans to pay for tuition, books, and fees related to their studies in a health care profession.

Upon completion of their respective programs, students who are employed at West Shore will have their loans forgiven in part or entirely, depending on length of employment.

Clara Kraus Saari High School Scholarship Program
Through this program, an annual scholarship is offered to a graduating senior from each Manistee County high school. Applicants must study for a career in a health care related field. Preference is given to children of West Shore associates.

To be considered, students must complete an application and submit a brief essay stating their educational goals and scholarship need. Three letters of recommendation also are required.

Classroom to Worksite Programs
West Shore Medical Center works with several community colleges and universities to provide students with in-hospital experience. Placements are available in radiology, physical therapy, nursing, nutrition services, and other areas.

Through the nurse externship program (pdf), students who have completed one year of clinical study work side-by-side with a registered nurse preceptor. They receive a competitive salary while building their clinical competencies.

A nurse intern position (pdf) is designed for recent graduates who want to enhance their skills before entering a full-time position or while waiting to complete their board examination.
